Nations on the Move
Tale of the Assassin
After returning to his time-line Brandis stayed in New Haven for a couple of months before travelling north to Aundair, after all he had a father and teacher to find. After months of searching, Brandis finally found Callahan. A year after finding Callahan, the Brotherhood of the Feather was reborn. Finally, Brandis was back were he belonged alongside his brothers and father. Life was good…until six years later when the cultists of Orcus came for the Brotherhood’s blood. The cultists came from no where and came in great numbers. Many brothers were lost in the battle…along with Callahan, Brandis had now lost his father a second time. After the battle, Brandis was one of the few survivors along with a handful of his brothers. Not knowing where to go, Brandis took the brotherhood to New Haven. Without Callahan’s guidance, it took Brandis and the brothers five years to regain their numbers. For several years things were peaceful in New Haven, the brotherhood served as its secret police force now. Shortly after Brandis had turned forty though, the cultists of Orcus showed appeared in New Haven, but this time Brandis would not let them take his brothers so easily.
The cultists entered the town from every direction, yet they did not destroy anything along the town. It was not until they reached the town square were they found their target, Brandis. Brandis held out his arms, “You want me foul beings,” Brandis drew his sword, The Raven’s Call, “then come and get me!” The cultists came in great numbers but Brandis had something they did not, skill. Within seconds he killed twenty cultists, he still retained plenty of speed and strength for his age. Unfortunately, Brandis could not face an entire army of the cultist – they quickly started to overwhelm him. Suddenly, arrow began to pelt the cultist from all angles…it was his brothers! Without hesitation, the brothers drew their weapons and attacked the cultists head on. Before Brandis could join in on the fray a hand was placed on his shoulder, “Now, I can’t let you have all the fun now…brother.” Brandis turned towards the voice, it was Rander. Brandis smirked at Rander, “Of course not, that would just be rude of me.” With pleasantries said, both Brandis and Rander tore into the cultists’ ranks. After hours of fighting in the streets, the cultists finally retreated – their number was atleast three fourths the size it was when they first came. Once the wounded had been taken care of the brothers had decided that Brandis was their new master and was named “Father” Brandis. At first Brandis refused, he claimed he needed time to think it over. That night Brandis walked his way to his home inside New Haven, talking to himself in the night air. “Oh, my friend Telm…if only you were here to guide me with your vast wisdom…to tell me what to do.” When Brandis reached his home he glanced at the lone willow sapling growing near the front door, he planted it when he came back to New Haven. When Brandis went inside his home he did not see what appeared to be star dust falling from the sky and landed on the young willow.
Hours later, Brandis was awoken to the sound of a knock at the door. Brandis opened the door slowly, blade at the ready. At the door stood a woman, her skin was as clear as the purest pearl, her eyes as black as the night itself, and her cloak was that of raven feathers. At first Brandis did not recognize the woman but he quickly knew somehow…it was The Raven Queen! With that known, Brandis quickly fell to his knees, “I am not worthy my Queen.” The Raven Queen put her hand on his, “Arise my follower, you are indeed worthy.” Brandis quickly rose back onto his feet, “What an honor to be visited by you my Queen, but I must ask what brings you here.” The Raven Queen eyes somehow seem to darker and Brandis’ question, “I need your help Brandis…Orcus he is making his move soon, I will need all the help I can acquire.” Brandis looked shocked at his Queen’s statement, “This…this…cannot be true my Queen.” The Raven Queen shook her head, “Unfortunately it is….along with I, an old friend of yours knows of this for he saw what I saw.” Brandis’ eyebrows raised, “Who?” With that The Raven Queen stepped aside to reveal a tree…a willow…but it had a face….it was Telm! “Telmerand! By the shadow, you’re alive!” The tree nodded, “Yes, it is nice to be alive again….but Brandis, The Queen is right…Orcus is moving soon…and we are going to need all the help we can get.” Brandis looked between The Raven Queen and Telm, “But what can I do? I am but a mortal and Orcus is a god, a powerful one.” The Raven Queen raised her hand, “That is why I am here, I have come to help…even the odds so to say,” with that The Raven Queen reached out and touched Brandis. Immediately Brandis was both wreathed in shadows and light. He was becoming closer to godhood…to help slay his Queen’s enemy…and now his new enemy as well.
